LSI Barcode Labels, Tags, and Ribbons

The barcode label you choose often reflects the quality and benefits of your company and it's products. Appearance although important, is not your only concern when selecting a barcode label manufacturer.

Other criteria to be evaluated:

  1. What type of adhesive is best utilized for my requirements?
  2. Direct Thermal or Thermal Transfer? What are the advantages of either technology? (see below)
  3. Label length, layout, and configuration software.
  4. Advantages/Disadvantages of Roll Stock or Fanfold.
  5. If Thermal Transfer is best. Is the standard wax, midrange, or resin imaging ribbon best for your requirements?

These are just a few of the issues to be evaluated when implementing your labeling project. Making the right decisions in these areas, will often determine whether your project ends in success.

LSI has 15 plus years of experience in helping customers solve their specific labeling needs. Whether it's a label applied to a packaged whole turkey that must withstand a hot shrink bath, or the oily residue present on assemblies that need to be labeled. LSI has the knowledge and product expertise to ensure customers receive the high quality labels, tags and ribbons which will meet you application demands. We want to make it easy for you to succeed!

Labels & Ribbons
Two basic thermal printing methods

Thermal Transfer Printing

In this method, the printhead transfers ink from a ribbon onto standard (less expensive) paper stock. The thermal transfer printer offers high resolution printing, and if the correct ribbons are used can provide a extra long shelf life, in applications where the imaging needs to be readable for years. The thermal Transfer also brings greater consumable costs because it utilizes a ribbon. Although this adds to the cost of the operation; it should be noted that the ribbon provides a shield, if you will, against the printhead which offers a much longer life than that of direct thermal printing.

Direct Thermal Printing

In this method, the paper stock used is a special, chemically treated stock where no ribbon is required. As a result consumable costs are less, but maybe at an expense.

The printhead is direct thermal printing undergoes substantially more wear and tear due to the paper having direct contact with the printhead, and utilizing higher burn times for imaging. The labels have an abrasive effect on the printhead, whereas the thermal transfer produces less friction, so a printhead can last up to four times longer when printing in thermal transfer than in direct mode.

Printheads are considered consumable items and must be included in the overall cost of operation. At costs depending upon printer and features ranging from $900 to $250.00, you can imagine it is extremely important to understand what method will perform best for your operation.
